How to Get Started with Undergraduate Research

One of the best ways to apply the knowledge you are gaining through coursework is by participating in undergraduate research. As Pitt is a major research university, all of its academic units are dedicated to the creation of knowledge through the research methods of each academic field. Thus, research takes many forms across the university, and getting involved as an undergraduate can look different in different fields.

To get involved, first look for opportunities in your major field: consult your department’s website, ask your major advisor and professors about undergraduate research opportunities. In lab-based fields, consult the websites of each research lab to identify ongoing research projects that match your skills and interests. If you haven’t yet taken classes with the lab’s director, or principal investigator (PI), try sending them a brief cold email explaining your skills, experience, and interest. In non lab-based fields, ask professors or major advisors if undergraduate research assistantships are available, or if the department sponsors an undergraduate research practicum course.

Honors College students should be aware of our Office of Undergraduate Research, which sponsors a one-credit undergraduate research course as well as a number of competitive fellowships designed to support undergraduate research and creative projects
