Fulbright
The Fulbright U.S. Student Program is one of the most prestigious and widely recognized national scholarships in the world. With the help and guidance of the Office of National Scholarships, the University of Pittsburgh has been named a Fulbright Top Producing Institution 10 times and has produced 129 winners since the 2013-14 cycle. Funded by the U.S. Department of State, the Fulbright U.S. Student Program provides opportunities for seniors, grad students, and recent alums to study at the graduate level, conduct research, or teach English in a country abroad. The goal of the program is to create global connections and promote cultural exchange and mutual understanding in over 140 countries.
Fulbright awards are split into two categories: Study/Research (S/R) and English Teaching Assistant (ETA) Awards. Study/Research Awards fund graduate study or independent research projects abroad. ETA Awards allow students to help teach English in a local classroom abroad. Both types of awards prioritize cultural immersion through work done in the classroom and community engagement outside of it.

NSF GRFP
The National Science Foundation Graduate Research Program (NSF-GRFP) is a federal funding opportunity that pays for three years of graduate school (Master's or PhD) in a STEM or social science focused research program. This fellowship also pays the student a $37,000 annual stipend for three years. Students who are seniors or in their first or second year of grad school this fall are eligible to apply in October. Non-students who have not started graduate school are also eligible.
